Brainerd School Board Approves Schematic Design Plans

The Brainerd Public Schools Board of Education took an important step in the Blueprint 181 building process by approving the schematic design plans for Harrison Elementary, Nisswa Elementary and the new elementary school to be located in Baxter.

“These designs really showcase the hard work done by each building’s team and the architects to study effective  21st century learning environments and come up with preliminary plans that take into account the wishes of our community and the professionals who work with our students in the buildings every day,” said Board of Education member Sue Kern.

Schematic Design is an important first step in the building process. This phase establishes the design in a conceptual manner and illustrates the sizes, adjacencies and relationships between programmatic spaces in the building.

The primary purpose of Schematic Design is to define and describe all the important aspects of the project. The design team, composed of the principal, teachers and staff, carried out this work during several meeting held over the summer months.
Community input was gathered during an Open House the district hosted for all community members on September 5, and through a feedback form found at Blueprint 181.org.

“We are so excited to move forward with these projects,” said Superintendent Laine Larson,  “We are grateful to our community for supporting and believing in the education that is happening at Brainerd Public Schools. We are ready to get working on the next steps and get these buildings completed.”
The next step in the process is Design Development. During this phase the design of the buildings is further defined and refined, including structure, mechanics, plumbing, electrical and interior finishes. The district expects to begin the design process on the other buildings in the district in spring 2019.
