Crow Wing County Man Loses Hand
On May 12th, around. 5:00 pm, the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a man who had his hand blown off by some homemade explosives. The incident happened at a home off of CR #36, Emily, MN. Upon arrival at the scene, deputies discovered a man who had received extensive injuries to his left hand. Deputies provided first aid until ambulance personnel arrived on scene. The man was then flown out to St. Cloud Hospital for his injuries. While on scene, deputies discovered additional explosive material around the yard and residence. The house and property were secured and the Crow Wing County Bomb Squad was called to process the scene. The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Lifelink and Crosslake Police Dept.
The bomb team took the unknown chemicals and destroyed them onsite by igniting them. Evidence at
the scene indicates that the injured victim, James Cummings, was attempting to manufacture
homemade exploding targets when the accident occurred. It appears that this type of activity was going
on for some time at this residence. There is no indication that there was any criminal intent by the
