'Take A Kid Fishing' Weekend in Minnesota

This weekend is the perfect time to get out on the ice and get the kids outdoors for ‘Take A Kid Fishing” weekend in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is encouraging those to ice fish Saturday, January 18th through Monday, January 20th.

During the weekend, Minnesota residents age 16 or older can fish or dark-house spear without an angling or spearing license if they take a child younger than 16 fishing or spearing.

Some events that correspond to this coming weekend include in the Northland at Lake Bemidji State Park from 1-3pm where kids 8-15 can come out for a fun afternoon of ice fishing. In the southern portion of the state, Halfmoon Landing near Kellogg will have equipment and bait provided for kids from 1-3pm, space is limited.

The DNR also reminds anglers that there is no guarantee of good ice conditions and they vary greatly this season. Always check local ice conditions before heading out on a lake or river. Visit the DNR’s website for ice safety conditions and the events calendar for more information.
